“And The Band Just Played On”
… but this song almost didn’t… play on, that is … you see, Ron, this amazing story-telling lyricist from the “other side of the pond” and owner of many of my songs words (see https://www.zanekuchera.com/archives/3375), gave me the lyrics shortly after we met on a now-de-funked songwriter-collaboration website back in 2021, after desperately looking to write songs with other artists amidst the Covid lockdown years.
Yet, it took until now, the beginning of 2025, to finally give birth to this completed song … a long and arduous gestation filled with countless distractions and seemingly endless attempts.
I just couldn’t get the rhythms and feelings to work together, to say nothing of the melody and harmonic sequences. Ron said the story was about meeting in a bar cafe, and being a brit, his meaning is a bit different than we Bostonians imagine.
It turns out that 6/8 timing and a jazzy rhythm & blues feel with an orchestra added from the bridge section to the ending made it all feel just fine. The music video “movie montage” brings the story home and is close-to-the-heart relatable… I hope so, anyways. Enjoy the video!
